Verizon to blanket ‘one third’ of America with LTE this year, double coverage in 15 months

Remember when we heard that Verizon Wireless just might be able to bump its commercial LTE rollout to thefirst quarter of 2010? Man, talk about having our hopes and dreams dashed. Here at CTIA, we heard a few details on the company’s most up-to-date deployment plans, and it sounds like things are pretty well locked into place at this point. Tony Melone, the company’s Senior Vice President and CTO, seemed remarkably enthused that a bona fide LTE network would be launching “in the not too distant future,” and when pressed for specifics, he stated that they would launch “25 to 30 networks this year, covering one third of America by the end of 2010.” Beyond that, we’re looking at a footprint twice that size “15 months” after the initial rollout, and by the end of 2013, the company’s 4G coverage map will be the same size, “if not larger,” than its existing 3G map. Of course, the carrier insisted that they wouldn’t be abandoning 3G advancement while being fixated on 4G, noting that it was moving “fast and aggressively” on both fronts, with hopes that its LTE network would eventually eclipse even the 3G networks (in terms of coverage size) of competitors. Them’s bold words, VZW, and we’ll be carefully watching to see if that really does come to fruition.

Skype Mobile App Coming To Verizon Wireless, Use On-Network To Be Allowed

A sweeping change is hitting the mobile industry, and we’re not just talking about 4G. It’sVoIP, and it has been around for years in the PC world, but is just now gaining ground in the mobile world due to carrier’s being reluctant to support it. Operators have long feared that enabling the use of Skype or any other VoIP calling software would eliminate the need for users to purchase those expensive minutes, but considering that the use of minutes is already declining thanks to mobile-to-mobile and the growth of texting, now is as good a time as any to have a change of heart.

Verizon Wireless, which was previously known as one of the most restrictive carriers in America, will be allowing Skype calls on their network starting on Thursday. Before, Skype Mobile could only be used over Wi-Fi, but as of March 25th you’ll be able to make those called on VZW’s network. It will only work on a number of BlackBerry devices at first, but more phones are expected to gain support soon. Ready to scale back your plan? Looks like you’ll be able to starting later this week if you’re a huge fan of Skype.

Verizon Wireless To Launch Mobile Payment Service

This spring, Verizon Wireless customers will get the ability to pay for online content and digital goods through their mobile phone accounts. To facilitate this capability, Verizon Wireless plans to roll out Danal’s BilltoMobile payment service.

The BilltoMobile feature can be used when buying an item from Danal’s participating network of eCommerce partners. The service will have a monthly spending limit of $25. Parents can enable content controls for individual accounts.

The process of paying for something through BilltoMobile is relatively simple: A user clicks the BilltoMobile button during checkout and enters his mobile phone number and billing zip code. A text message with a one-time passcode is then sent to his mobile number. After entering this one-time passcode in the online checkout window, the transaction is complete. Read more of this post
