Google shows off Motorola Tablet, Android 3.0

Google Android 3.0 Honeycomb isn’t due out until next year, but Android boss Andy Rubin gave a sneak peek at the OS at D: Dive into Mobile last night. The operating system will be optimized to run not just on smartphones, but also on tablets with larger displays, and Rubin showed how the Gmail app will look on the larger screen: It will have a two-pane view, with a message list on the left and the message you’re reading on the right, which is pretty much how the iPad Mail app works.

As for the Motorola Tablet, Rubin didn’t spill a lot of details, but he did say that it has a dual core NVIDIA chip. Odds are that’s an NVIDIA Tegra chip, although it’s not clear if the tablet will launch with the latest 1GHz Tegra 2 processor or one of the company’s upcoming chips. Read more of this post

Beside teaming up with AT&T, Motorola got cozy with Verizon too and announced two Android (2.1) smartphones that will be released by it later this quarter. One of those two models is called Citrus and is an entry-level and wannabe affordable touchscreen phone.

Citrus includes a touch panel located on the back that helps with navigation, comes with seven home screen panels to choose from, and has a housing made from 25% post-consumer recycled plastic.

The phone’s price tag was not revealed.

The second Verizon-tagged smartphone unveiled this week by Motorola is the Droid Pro, a model pre-loaded with Android 2.2 and the Quickoffice Mobile Suite, which features both a 3.1-inch multi-touch display, and a QWERTY keyboard which is very handy when typing emails and chatting.

Motorola Stingray 10-inch tablet said to launch in Q1 2011 through Verizon

The beginning of 2011 is shaping up like a very hot period for the tablet market thanks to the introduction of RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook and the rumored arrival of Motorola’s Stingray, a 10-inch touchscreen device powered by Android 3.0 (Gingerbread).

The Stingray is supposed to be packing an Nvidia Tegra 2 SoC (two Cortex-A9 1GHz cores on-board), 16GB of built-in storage, and will support CDMA but be upgradeable to LTE. Motorola’s tablet will be carried by Verizon in the US. Pricing is unknown.

Motorola announces H17txt Bluetooth headset with MotoSpeak

Looking for another reason to wear a Bluetooth headset all the time? Then you might want to consider admitting you have a problem, or you might want to get Motorola’s new H17txt model, which can be paired with the company’s new MotoSpeak text-to-speech application to read text messages aloud as they come in. That software is available for Android and BlackBerry initially, and will apparently even translate 150 different commonly used acronyms so things like l8r don’t get read as l, eight, r. As for the headset itself, it’s a fairly standard affair, with it boasting CrystalTalk noise-canceling technology, five hours of talk time and seven hours standby, and Bluetooth 2.1 compatibility. Still no indication of a price, but it should be available through Verizon starting today.

Motorola’s i1 hitting SouthernLINC Wireless, Georgians and Alabamians rejoice

Motorola's i1 hitting SouthernLINC Wireless, Georgians and Alabamians rejoice

Moto’s i1 went from rumored device to ready for retail over the span of just a few weeks, and now we’re finding out just where it’ll be available — though the news isn’t exactly good. Motorola is announcing that the iDENdevice will be hitting SouthernLINC first, a rural carrier that you may not have heard of if you’re outside of Alabama, Georgia, or the western half of the Florida panhandle. That is the extent of this carrier’s coverage, and so it’s not a huge coming out party for this military spec push-to-talk smartphone, but we’re hoping down the road it gets a little more love from carriers with slightly broader coverage maps.

Motorola’s Android-powered i1 launching at CTIA

With CTIA still a day away, we’re stoked to have already seen a giant billboard near the convention center confirming the rumored Motorola i1. Of course, billboards rarely offer much insight into the device’s specifics, but there is a pretty decent view of the UI and its slogan: “Grab Life by the Calls.” As you’d expect, we’ll be all over this set just as soon as we can get at one, but in the interim follow on for one more pic after the break that features the i1’s poster boy, Mike Rowe of Discovery’s Dirty Jobs.

HTC Sense UI ported to the Motorola DROID

By now you’re probably getting tired of the plain ole vanilla Android on your droid. Now you can change it up a bit, Sense UI from the upcoming HTC Desire has been ported to the Droid.

This ROM has been in the works for about a month now and a beta has been released by AllDroid user Greek35T. There are still a few kinks to workout but early reports from users have been positive. You currently can’t make calls while 3G is active and there is no Bluetooth or GPS, hopefully these things will be worked out soon so all you Droid users can enjoy Sense and all the goodies that come with it.

Verizon delays Android 2.1 rollout to Motorola Droid, new date is TBD

Oh, bollocks! After hearing for days that Verizon Wireless would be pushing out the highly anticipated Android 2.1 update to its stable of Droid users, along comes this. Internal company documentation clearly states that the aforementioned update won’t be going down today, and there’s no clear indication of when it will. To quote:

  • “The OTA software update for the Droid by Motorola is TBD. A new date will be communicated as soon as possible.
  • The 3/18 OTA software update will not happen as planned. A new date will be communicated as soon as possible.”

We knew things were just too quiet after the noon hour, and now we know why. An impromptu support group meeting has been scheduled for 1:30PM ET, though we’re hearing the location is still being decided…
