Lenovo introduces IdeaPad S205 ultraportable laptop with AMD Zacate chip

The Lenovo Ideapad S205 is one of the first thin and laptops to pack an AMD Zacate chip. Like the IdeaPad S100 netbook, the S205 is expected to begin shipping in March, but this model packs a larger display, far more power, and a heftier starting price of $499.99.

The S205 features an 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display and Windows 7 Home Premium. It has 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth, an integrated Webcam (0.3MP or 1.3MP), and optional 3G. It will be available with up to an AMD Dual Core E-350 processor, up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, and up to 750GB of hard drive space.

The laptop measures 10.6″ x 6.6″ x 1.1″ and weighs just under 3 pounds.

Lenovo introduces Ideapad S100 10 inch netbook

Lenovo is updating its netbook line today with the introduction of the IdeaPad S100. Like the S10, S10-2, and S10-3 that preceded it, the Lenovo IdeaPad S100 features a 10 inch display. But this will be the first netbook model from Lenovo with support for a dual core processor.

The S100 will be available with up to an Atom N570 dual core CPU. It will also be available with an Atom N455 or N475 single core chip. The netbook also  supports up to 2GB of DDR3 of memory, and up to 320GB of hard drive space. It will have Integrated Intel GMA 3150 graphics, a 2MP wecbam, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, and Bluetooth.

The mini-laptop has a redesigned keyboard which Lenovo says is 98% of the size of a full-sized keyboard, which is pretty impressive for a 10 inch netbook. The keyboard actually looks a lot like the chiclet-style keyboard Lenovo has been using for its 11.6 inch and smaller ThinkPad laptops.

The Lenovo IdeaPad S100 will be available in March for $329.99 and up.

Lenovo’s Core i3 / i5-based IdeaPad Z560 now available to order

We’d heard it was coming in June, and it looks like Lenovo’s new Core i3 / i5-based IdeaPad Z560 is now already available to order directly from the company, with a promised ship date “within 13 days” (i.e. sometime in June, unless Lenovo really starts to move these out). Starting at just $739, the laptop packs a 15.6-inch 1366 x 768 LED-backlit display, along with your choice of integrated Intel HD or discrete NVIDIA GeForce 310M graphics, 3GB or 4GB of RAM, 320GB or 500GB hard drives, a DVD burner, a six-cell battery and, of course, your choice of Intel’s latest and greatest ULV processors. Still undecided? Then perhaps our recent hands-on will help sway you one way or the other.

Lenovo Ideapad U165 to ship with AMD processors

Last week Lenovo introduced a series of new laptops with 11 to 15 inch displays and new Intel processors. But something that I totally missed was the mention of a new Lenovo IdeaPad U165, which according to Netbook News.de will be powered by an AMD processor.

There’s not a lot of information available at the moment, so we don’t know how much the 11.6 inch Lenovo IdeaPad U160 will cost or which of AMD’s latest low power processors it will use. But Lenovo is grouping the laptop with the IdeaPad U160 on its product page, which means that the U165 and U160 will probably feature the same case design and basic features including HDMI output. The primary difference will be that the U160 will have an Intel chipset while the U165 will be AMD powered.

Lenovo IdeaPad U Series updated with Core i3, i5, i7 ULV processors

Well, thank you, Lenovo! Not only for updating the thin and light IdeaPad U Series laptops with new chiclet keyboards and ambient light sensors, but for finally giving us some details on Intel’s new Core i3, i5 and i7 ULV processors. That’s right, the new IdeaPad U lappies will be available at the beginning of June and will pack brand new Core 2010 ULV chips, which is in line with what we have heard about the release. Like the current U Series, the 11.6-inch U160, 13-inch U360,14-inch U460 and 15-inch U560 all measure less an an inch-thick and don’t weigh more than 3.8 pounds. And according to the spec sheets, all will be configurable with your pick of ultra-low-voltage Core i7 (1.6GHz Core i7-640UM, 1.06GHz Core i7-620UM), Core i5 (1.2GHz Core i5-540UM, 1.06GHz Core i5-520UM, 1.2GHz Core i5-430UM) and Core i3 (1.2GHz Core i3-330UM) processors. There’s no indication of discrete graphics options, but on the lower end there are also be Pentium and Celeron processor choices — we’re assuming the $679 starting SKU doesn’t get the Core 2010 ULV love. We don’t have any performance stats from Lenovo, but it does claim that the entire series continues to be all about portability and long battery life. Regardless, we’re still extremely excited about the entire group, though something about that 11.6-inch U160 and the ability to configure it with a Core i7 UM processor has us exceptionally giddy. We’re hoping to spend more time with these soon, but till then, be sure and check out the hands-on pics below.

Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3t convertible tablet: Unboxing and first look

The Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3t is a 10 inch convertible tablet style netbook. Like a typical netbook it features a nearly full-sized QWERTY keyboard. But like a tablet PC (or iPad), it has a touchscreen display. What makes it somewhat special is the fact that you can rotate the display 180 degrees and fold it down over the keyboard to hold the computer like a tablet. Or you can place the computer on a desk or lap and use it like a notebook.

Lenovo sent me a demo unit to test and you can check out my unboxing video after the break. In the meantime, my first impressions are… mixed.

On the one hand, the form factor is quite nice. The netbook really does offer some of the best features of a netbook and tablet thanks to the light weight and large keyboard. On the other hand, it’s hampered by a few major issues:

  • My demo unit ships with Windows 7 Starter Edition
  • The capacitive touchscreen isn’t very comfortable (compared with an iPhone or Google Nexus One)
  • The touchpad is tiny and features integrated buttons
  • The netbook feels sluggish

By and large, the operating system is probably the biggest problem I have so far. While you can tap at the screen with your fingertip to click on items, drag and drop icons, or manipulate scrollbars, you don’t get most of the touchscreen optimizations that come with Windows 7 Home Premium and Professional. For instance, there’s no simulated right-click option. In Windows 7 Home Premium you can tap and hold the screen to emulate a right-click. That doesn’t work with this netbook.

Update: OK, for some reason the simulated right click feature did just start working. When you tap and hold on the screen for a moment and then let go, a right-click context menu will appear. I don’t know why that wasn’t working before.

You also can’t scroll through web pages by flipping your finger across the screen in Internet Explorer. Instead you have to pinpoint the small scrollbar on the edge of the screen — which is much harder than it sounds when using a fingertip instead of a stylus or mouse.

While Windows 7 Starter does have an on-screen keyboard that you can use to enter text in tablet mode, it doesn’t come up automatically when you tap on a text input box. That means you have to launch the keyboard manually every time you want to enter text. I’d recommend pinning the keyboard to your taskbar, because the first time I put the computer into tablet mode, it took me a few minutes to figure out how to enter text — at which point I had to return the computer to laptop mode and use the touchpad to launch the on-screen keyboard.

The Lenovo Ideapad S10-3t does automatically rotate the display between portrait and landscape mode. And the screen automatically adjusts when you switch from notebook to tablet mode. But it takes a few seconds for the screen to rotate. I get the feeling that while the 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor is more than fast enough to power a typical netbook, it might take a faster processor to adequately power a Windows 7 touchscreen tablet.

But I also noticed that if you launch the on-screen keyboard application while you’re in landscape mode, it willnot automatically resize itself when you shift to tablet mode — which means the keyboard extends beyond the edge of the screen. The only way to fix this is to close the keyboard app and reopen it.

Some of these issues can be addressed by upgrading the operating system or purchasing the Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3t with Windows 7 Home Premium. Lenovo does offer that option, although the Windows 7 Starter version sells for $549 while the Windows 7 Home Premium model costs an extra $100 thanks to the addition of a larger hard drive, additional RAM, and Bluetooth 2.1 as well as the operating system upgrade.

Bear in mind, these are just my first impressions. I’ll have a detailed review of the laptop soon. And I do like the overall build quality. The keyboard seems decent and while the screen wobbles a little bit, the swivel feels pretty sturdy, as does the rest of the laptop.

Lenovo launches IdeaPad S10-3s netbook

Lenovo is introducing a new netbook that looks an awful lot like it’s last netbook — the IdeaPad S10-3. The new Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3s has a similar chiclet-style keyboard and touchpad with integrated left and right buttons. And the basic specs are the same, with an Intel Atom Pine Trail CPU, a 10.1 inch display, and 802.11b/g/n WiFi. The starting price of $379.99 is also pretty familiar.

But there are a few differences. The most noticeable is that the IdeaPad S10-3s features a slightly modified case design with rounded corners, making it look more like the older IdeaPad S10-2 than the S10-3.  But more significantly, the new model is available with a bunch of configuration options that aren’t available on the S10-3, including:

  • CPU: Intel Atom N450 or N470
  • Display: 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel or 1280 x 720 pixel
  • Memory: Up to 2GB
  • OS: Windows 7 Starter, Windows XP
  • Storage: 160GB, 250GB, 320GB hard drive, or 16GB, 32GB solid state disk
  • Connectivity: Optional Bluetooth, 3G modem
  • Battery: 3 cell or 7 cell

The new netbook will also come with a new suite of software including DirectShare for syncing your files with another PC and Maplife for detecting your location over a WiFi connection. Lenovo also plans to offer the netbook in black and white, and with a new “spring flowers” case design. Only the white model will be available in the US at launch.

The Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3s measures 10.6″ x 6.6″ x 0.9″ and weighs 2.43 pounds with a 3 cell battery or 2.76 pounds with a 6 cell battery.
